Pictures of Beacons near my
location
A while ago I started a tour to find a few of my nearest beacons, at least
there are three of them in a range of 20 km from my QTH. So I packed my camera,
road maps and a radio to find them. Well, have you ever seen the coordinates
of an NDB in any list ? I have been so naiv to take them for beeing precise
... So I let MapBlast create a few maps for, already knowing the area quite
well and assuming, simply to drive to the NDBs and take a few pictures
:-)
In fact it took about one hour to reach the first one, about two hours for
the second and the third one LI-417 is still a mysterium to me. I am realy
good familiar with the area where it should be, have been there quite often
for a sundays walk but no sign at all.
To be correct I have to say, that the radio which I took with me for locating
the beacons was my AR8600. I knew that it's specified working range starts
on 500 KHz, but the great advantage of it is the internal battery pack. Usually
for outdoors I use my Fairhaven RD500VX, but it is bounded to my car because
of the power lead to the cigarette lighter. So I gave my AR8600 a quick check
on my 10m longwire and LI-417, DY-284.5 and MGB-377 were beeping from the
speaker. But this was a lousy test... Out in the field with only a whip antenna
first time I heard a very quiet beep from DY-284.5 when I was standing 5m
away right in front of the antenna itself... arrgghh...
Anyway, here are the first pictures of DY and MGB, more will follow soon...

After I bought a handheld GPS receiver it had been
a very easy job locating LI-417... :-) |
